Carpel is the elementary unit of gynaecium (pistil).


A carpel is the elementary unit of gynaecium (pistil). It is an evolution feature and it exists only in Angiosperms or Flowering plants. In more primitive groups of plants, such as Gymnosperms (Pine, Picea...), ovules are naked and not protected by this structure.
